One of the most spectacular rides we have done so far on the trip was the ride from Silver City to Mimbres via Lake Roberts. It was through the Gila National Forest and over the Continental Divide twice. The view was of beautiful forest and streams and was so peaceful.
From Mimbres we went over Emory pass, which at 8228 feet is the highest point on the trip. The ascent was 22 miles, with a very steep last 5 miles of switchbacks. The view from the top was fantastic.
We then descended into Hillsboro hoping to be able to buy food for dinner and eat some delicious pie ( Cathy had done this when she came through 3 years ago). The pie shop was closed as was the grocery store.
We ended up going into Angela's resale shop and restaurant. She opened up specially for us and made us coffee and served slices of delicious home baked bread. Cathy asked where she could buy dinner for 15 hungry people. Angela sold her 8lbs of frozen brisket she had made and stored in the freezer as well as buns and 2 apple pies. The dinner was great and enjoyed by all.
Today we rode on to Radium Spring and camped in the Leasburg Dam State Park. Unfortunately the hot springs are no longer operational. Berit did, however, buy wine from the vineyard down the road which went very well with the vegetable chili Joe and Jase made. This included roasted chilies Errol bought as we passed through Hatch - famous for its chilies.
